For Papa {Get Well Card}

Sunday, December 6, 2009

My husband's grandfather had hip surgery a couple of months ago and we wanted to send our thoughts and prayers to him in Texas so I made a custom card with this unique cardstok I found that featured stripes in metallic and non-metallic colors. We paired it with a green friendly "kraft paper" type of cardstock and then finished it off with some stamping that was done with metallic copper ink and an envelope liner. I really loved how this one turned out! I could use that paper again and again if I had the chance!

Matinae Design Studio {Announcement!}

Sunday, November 29, 2009

Some big changes are taking place for Matinae Design Studio and I thought I'd take some time out to tell our wonderful clients what is to come!

The biggest change coming MDS's way is a STUDIO! That's right, we've been busy constructing a home studio that will be a wonderful place to work, design, and meet with our clients! It's been a long process but has been so much fun and is sure to be very rewarding.

We are also in the middle of re-branding MDS. You'll soon find a new look on the website and blog. New business cards are also in the works. Some local businesses have even offered to allow me to place my cards in their shops so soon you'll be seeing MDS business cards around town! Thank you to all of the love and support that people have offered me. Networking with other businesses (local and not so local) has been such a blessing.

We'll also soon be on ETSY!! We'll be opening a shop there soon that is sure to be filled with new products! We have so many new ideas and techniques that we can't wait to try out!

We hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and for those of you who had a long weekend, I hope you enjoyed it! I can't believe the holiday season is already underway!

XOXO,

Kelley Elizabeth [Bridal Shower Invitations]

Monday, November 16, 2009

Maid of Honor, Ashley, came to me to see about designing bridal shower invitations for her bestfriend's bridal shower. She wanted to use the ever popular damask pattern. I showed her some of the damask patterns that I had and she fell in love with this one. The invitation was a 5x7 invite printed on heavy white cardstock. Ashley told me that Kelley loved the classic vintage feel of damask patterns but also liked polka dots and of course lots of PINK! We added a lighter pink polka dot border around the oval and accented her name with the same color pink outline.
-Ashley, it was a pleasure to work with you to create these bridal shower invitations! I hope Kelley's bridal shower was a success yesterday! You've done such a good job as maid of honor! :) Kelley, I hope you enjoyed your shower! I hope your big day is all that you have dreamed it to be! Congrats! :)

Clayton Chase [Baby Announcement]

Monday, November 9, 2009

This is a project that we did in September that I'm just now getting around to blogging. David and Carly had just welcomed their first baby into the world - one of the most handsome baby boys you have ever seen! Carly wanted me to design a unique "newspaper" formatted announcement using baby blue, chocolate brown and tan colors. This was probably one of the most fun baby announcements that I have designed yet as I got to design with a mixture of colors and fonts! Here is the final product!!

Caleb's 3rd Birthday [Handmade Card]

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

My cousin, Kristin, and her husband Phil, had a baby boy 3 years ago. This little boy is the most adorable thing that you have ever seen and he and his family have been through to much! Caleb recently had a heart transplant. In his first 3 years of life, Caleb and his family have had to endure things that most of us can't even imagine! From countless doctor visits and testing, to being transported by medial helicopter to being put on the waiting list for a heart transplant to then receiving one - Caleb, Kristin and Phil have handled it in the most amazing way! I can't tell you how proud of them I am and how happy I am that my little cousin is now finding out what it truly means to be a kid!
His 3rd birthday party was held in August. It was a huge party! Unfortunately, my husband and I had already made plans months before to be in Santa Barbara celebrating our anniversary but my mom was able to go and said it was amazing! We both created this card for her to take to Caleb. This birthday card was given to him along with a "telegram" that we created telling him and his parents that he would be receiving a very special and vintage train set from our family. The whole party had a cowboy theme to it and was held at the fair grounds in a barn. There was face painting, a petting zoo, a huge multiple tired cowboy cake, and so much more! You can click here to read about the party, click here to follow Caleb's story through his mother's blog entries on Care Pages, or click here to read more about Caleb on his website!

Here is the telegram which was printed on aged and distressed paper. I don't have an actual picture of that. :(

Kayla's Baby Announcement

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

I was contacted by one of the sweetest couples ever to design a baby announcement for their newborn baby girl, Kayla! Jen told me that she wanted the announcements to be brown, pink, and girly so we opted for a square announcement that featured a brown and pink floral and polka dot print. The announcements were put in chocolate brown square envelopes that featured pink wrap address labels with brown print. The front of the wrap label was also accented with the pattern that was featured on the announcement.

Jennifer and Cole - Congrats on your new arrival! Kayla is so adorable! I hope the both of you are enjoying every minute of being new parents!

Cheetah Mosaic [Birthday Card]

Saturday, October 10, 2009

My future sister-in-law celebrated her birthday in August. She loves cheetah print so we created a cheetah mosaic card for her. Yes, we cut out every single piece of paper to create it! Haha Once everything was cut, the design fell into place and we then added glitter. The inside of the card was gold vellum and the card was finished off with some gold metallic ribbon.
-Mariah, I hope you had a wonderful birthday! We still owe you a birthday dinner! :) I'm glad you had fun celebrating in Santa Barbara!

Michael + Jennifer [Save the Dates]

Friday, October 2, 2009

These save the dates have to have been one of the most fun projects yet! Mike and Jen contacted me about creating save the dates for their wedding. When they told me that they were going to be using the red and turquoise color scheme that seems so popular right now, I jumped at the chance to create something for them! Jen e-mailed me a picture of a paper flower that she had seen and wanted to incorporate that into her save the dates. I gathered my supplies - some stickers, ribbon, 5 different patterned papers, 1 solid paper, and red envelopes and this is what developed....

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

These save the dates feature a huge layered paper flower on the front of them complete with a ribbon center. The saying "Love is Blooming!" is used on the front. On the back, more paper flowers are featured along with their save the date information. We used bright red envelopes with turquoise wrap address labels that had polka dot sticker accents on them. We used a coordinating paisley print paper for the envelope liners and cut out the paisley print to use as leaves for the flowers. I am so proud of how these turned out and it kind of makes me want to get married all over again. :)

-Mike and Jen, thank you so much for allowing me to create your save the dates. Your wedding is going to be so fun and unique. I wish you both all of the best!

Cole + Brittany [Dinner Party Invitations]

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Cole and Brittany are one of the engaged couples that I'm working with right now. They have been such a fun and sweet couple to work with! Brittany contacted me in regards to designing dinner invitations for her. She wanted them to be bright and have a fun pattern to them. The dinner was to be an "end of summer" dinner, but what her guests didn't know, was that the dinner was really the chance for Cole and Brittany to ask all of them to be a part of their bridal party. How cute! I got Brittany's request about 11 days before the dinner was to take place so I needed to make them super fast! I ran to the store, found bright striped paper, and ran home to print them. I think I had them ready within 24 hours. I love when projects go that well!
We printed the invitations on white cardstock and then double matted them on a red/orange cardstock and then the bright striped paper. The striped paper has an underlying polka dot pattern to it as well. This paper was double sided, so even the backs of the invitations were colorful and fun! Sorry about some of the pictures being overexposed! Some of the client's information is blurred out to protect their privacy.

Tom + Ellie [25th Anniversary]

Tom and Ellie celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in June and to celebrate the occasion, their son planned a party with close family and friends at a local restaurant in Ventura. I was contacted to make invitations to send out and the only request was that they were stylish (and on the simple side) and were square. We printed the invitations on this beautiful steel blue/silver metallic paper. We kept the font on the simple side and added a rub on embellishment to add a bit of style. We matted the invitations on black cardstock and put them in black square envelopes.
The quality of the pictures I took are horrible but I hope you'll be able to get the idea of what they looked like. They were beautiful in person! Some of the client's information has been blurred out to protect their privacy.

Jim's 50th Birthday Invitations

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Jim's wife contacted me regarding a celebration she had planned for his 50th birthday. They were going to be celebrating with close family and friends at a ranch in the mountains. She wanted something earthy and simple. We found this green paper that was actually fabric that has a special backing on it that allows it to run through a printer. We printed the invitation in chocolate brown ink and added an oak tree to the top of it as the ranch property features many oak trees. We finished it off by adding a recycled tan paper matte and some twine. Up close, you can see that the fabric "paper" frays a tiny bit. How cool! It's always fun to work with new materials!

Thank You Cards

Saturday, September 19, 2009

In August my uncle suddenly passed away due to a massive heart attack that he had while sleeping. They were able to bring him back to life but after a week of being in the hospital his scans showed no brain activity so the family decided to take him off of life support. My uncle lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. We didn't get to meet his girlfriend or his life long friends. Before my uncle was taken off of life support, my grandfather decided that he needed to go out to NC to take care of my uncle and everything that comes along with a passing of a loved one. I was worried about him as he had just turned 80 and this was going to be the first time he'd be traveling alone without my grandmother as she can no longer fly. I was worried about him making it out there under the stress of it all and being alone when he got there. This ended up not being the case! Once my grandfather reached NC, my uncle's girlfriend encouraged him to come and stay at Andrew's house with her. Her grown son had flown in to help out and within days, two of my uncle's life long friends were also there helping out. Soon enough my grandfather had 4 individuals that he had never met, take him in, take care of him, and help him with the passing of his son. It's amazing that through Andrew's passing, 4 individuals came together to take care of one another...all because they loved Andrew.
This was a hard time for my family. Andrew was a great man - hardworking, caring, and loving. On top of that, this was the 3rd child my grandfather was lost. To say that he'll be missed is an understatement. This time was easier on all of us because of these 4 individuals though and for that, we wanted to thank them.
Once returning home, we knew that we wanted to send cards out to these individuals...a thank you for taking care of my grandfather, for loving my Uncle Andrew, and to share our sympathies with them. We hand made cards for each person using a leaf motif as my uncle loved the natural beauty and fall colors of North Carolina. We used a wrap label for the addressing and included a envelope liner.
Also included in this entry is a thank you card for a neighbor of my grandparent's who sent flowers and offered his condolences. We used a damask inspired print for his card.

Anne + Brian [Wedding Invitation Suite]

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

First ad foremost, thank you to all of you who sent me so many comments/messages on the blog, Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter regarding the previous post about Bri's birthday invitations! The response to the invitations was amazing and put it a really big smile on my face today! :)

Now on to today's post which features Anne and Brian's wedding design suite! This is one of the most fun projects yet - but was also the biggest order we have had (besides my own wedding)!! I am beyond thrilled with the way everything came together and the fact that Anne and Brian love the items as much as I do, is icing on the cake! They'll be getting married in San Diego next year. They're going with a chic and contemporary black, white, and yellow theme. I had this scroll work design on my computer and when I showed it to Anne, she loved the look of it.

-Anne and Brian, you both were a joy to work with! Thanks for allowing me the honor of designing all of these items for your wedding. I know your big day is going to be so beautiful and I wish you guys many years of love and happiness!

Click HERE to view a full size image of the whole suite! From the top left we have the wedding invitation and envelope (front and back featuring a wrap label, envelope liner, and custom postage stamp), favor label/monogram, save the date and envelope, menu, table name, custom postage stamp, program cover, and the RSVP postcard (front and back). Not pictured is the seating chart that I'll be making as her date gets closer, candy buffet labels and possible place cards.

Bri's "Flirting with Forty" Invitations

Monday, September 14, 2009

Bri's friend, Susan, along with some other friends are planning to have a girls night out in celebration of Bri's 40th Birthday! Susan came to me wanting fun but chic birthday invitations and said that Bri loved Zebra print. We found this ribbon and ran with it! We used a combination of cardstock including crocodile paper and completed it with some black feathers.

-Happy 40th Birthday, Bri! I hope you girls have tons of fun while out and having the night to yourselves! What a great way to celebrate!

Matt + Jenae [Our 1st Anniversary!]

Sunday, September 6, 2009

Matt and I returned home from our anniversary trip on Tuesday and are now trying to get back into the swing of things. We enjoyed two days in Carpinteria, got to enjoy a huge breakfast at the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort using our free breakfast coupon that was included in our wedding package, got to meet a wonderful bride who I had met through TheKnot.com who was getting married at the Biltmore on the 29th, got to stay at the Fess Parker for free using our points one night and then for half price the other night thanks to our wonderful catering manager, Chuck Henderson, at the Fess Parker and so much more! Our floral designer created a beautiful bouquet and bout for our shoot and our wedding baker even sent over a anniversary cake to thank us and thanking her. Isn't it funny how that works sometimes? :)
Our vacation was so relaxing and we are so beyond pleased with the pictures that we got from our Forever After/Trash the Dress session with Hazelnut Photography! Moria Taylor glammed me up! She is a joy to work with as is Jordana Hazel! I highly recommend both of them!! They were so fun and easy to be around! Jordana blogged a few of our pictures on the Hazelnut Photography blog and now we're waiting on the rest of them to be sent to us! Here are our two favorites so far...can't wait to see more!

For those of you getting married or who are newlyweds, I highly suggest doing a session like this. It was so much fun to get all dressed up again and to be able to take pictures in different locations that you wouldn't typically be able to shoot at on your wedding day. It was so nice not to have to worry about anything getting dirty or messed up too.
We had a wonderful first anniversary! I can't believe how fast this first year has gone by. I am so thankful to have such a loving and supportive husband! I'm already looking forward to our next vacation/adventure! :)

Rachel + Thomas [Wedding Invitation Suite]

Rachel and Thomas are getting married next month in Bakersfield. Rachel contacted me about designing their invitations, response cards, table numbers, and favor tags in July using a aqua blue and chocolate brown color scheme with polka dots! We printed everything on aqua metallic cardstock and matted it on bronze cardstock. Being that they were printed on metallics, the pictures didn't come out super well (still waiting on buying a new and better camera!) but I hope you enjoy them. I love the favor tags that feature the saying "thanks for being here to celebrate with us and for being a bright *spot* in our day" The *spot* is actually a polka dot! Love it!

Rachel and Thomas - congrats on your up and coming big day! I hope it's everything that you have ever dreamed of! :)

We've stocked up with new inventory, have started using some fresh and new techniques, and have booked new clients! We're so very excited to share these new projects with you and are hoping to continue to book projects and help people out with all of their design and printing needs!

My husband and I leave for vacation on Friday to celebrate our first wedding anniversary! Our wedding was also featured on
Pretty Chicky yesterday! What an honor to have been featured on Pretty Chicky's website. Thanks to Shari at PC for featuring us. A little post about Matinae Design Studio is also supposed to be posted but I haven't seen it yet. So excited! We're also sneaking in a "Trash the Dress" session with Jordana Hazel of Hazelnut Photography. She's an amazing photographer out of Hollywood. Check out her blog to view her wonderful photography. If you love her and her work as much as I do and would like to book her, she is available for travel! Her sister, Moira, is also coming to do my hair and make-up and is also available to book!

Rochelle [Business Cards, Flyers, and Signs]

Saturday, August 8, 2009

Rochelle is a local manicurist who was in need of some promotional items. She was fresh out of business cards so I designed some zebra bordered business cards that were printed on premium pearl metallic card stock. They were double sided cards with her information on the front while the back featured the client's appointment information (type of service, day and time). She currently works at two salons so we made cards for both of them. I cut each of the 500 cards out individually. I made a coordinating zebra print box to hold the majority of her cards too!

Photobucket

Rochelle offers "Princess Days" as part of her services. Princess Days occur once every month or so and are days where little girls can come in to get their nails and hair done along with face painting. The cool part is that Rochelle and the rest of the girls at the salon dress up in full princess costumes! They look like they have come straight from Disneyland! She needed flyers and two signs made for advertisement. We left some blank space on the sign so she could add pictures of their past princess days. Here is what we came up with for her....
Photobucket
She also offers Rock Star Nail parties so we designed flyers for that as well. Both the rock star and princess flyers were accented with glitter after printing.
Photobucket

You can call Rochelle at the number featured on her card for information regarding her services! She's a great manicurist!

Sara + Marc [Wedding Invitations & Guestbook]

Saturday, July 25, 2009

I had posted the invitations that I had made for Sara and Marc's wedding last month but Sara came back to order more invitations. I got to print the address and return address on these. They were both printed in the same simple font that was featured on the invitation but the return address was printed on the back flap of the envelope. I also created a custom guestbook for her. The guestbook pages featured their names and date at the top with ribbon trim that matched the ribbon that was added to her invitations. I designed a monogram for the front of the album and we also included the monogram on the first page. Each page has a picture place holder. Sara will add some of her favorite wedding pictures after their big day in place of the picture holder.

Matinae Design Studio [Business Cards]

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

So with business picking up, it was time for me to break down and take some time out to design and print my own business cards. I choose to print my cards on a dark purple metallic paper and to feature a scroll work design on the front of the card. The cards are double sided but of course I printed them before I got the website up and running so that isn't featured on these. I'll be printing more this week that feature the web address for the website too. After they were printed, I added rhinestone accents to the front of the card!

Megan + Josh [Wedding Design Suite]

I has posted a sneak peak at this design last week and got some wonderful feedback on it from the blog readers and those who follow us on Myspace and Facebook. Here's the whole design suite that I came up with for Megan and Josh. The suite includes a panel invitations, table numbers, favor tags, place cards, programs, and response cards (not pictured). I simply love how chic these turned out. Everything is double matted on dark pink Bling cardstock and matte black cardstock.

Marissa's Birthday Invitations

Marissa is turning 21 and will be celebrating by having dinner and drinks with some of her closest friends at the Elephant Bar. Her favorite colors are lime green and chocolate brown so we found this ribbon and ran with it! Please excuse some of the imperfections on this invite. We were testing out what adhesive would work best.

-Marissa, have a Happy Birthday and welcome to the "21 and over" club!

Heather [Bridal Shower Invitation]

Monday, July 13, 2009

Heather's wedding colors are dark pink and orange which I loved (I wonder why...could it be because they were my colors too?) :) I happened upon this glitter embellished damask print paper and fell in LOVE. My only regret is that I would have found it in time for MY wedding...haha! The invites featured dark pink text printed on mango colored card stock. We then matted a piece of the damask print paper onto some raspberry card stock and added that to the invitation. I love how simple by stylish they turned out!
-Congrats, Heather and have a blast at your bridal luncheon!

Megan + Josh Wedding Invitations [Sneak Peek]

Friday, July 10, 2009

Megan contacted me about designing invitations, table numbers, programs, place cards, and favor labels for their upcoming wedding. When I asked her about design details and inspiration for their wedding she mentioned that her colors were black, white, and dark pink. I suggested using damask print and 2 hours later, I had everything designed! I was so excited about these. They're like nothing I have ever designed before and I just love how they turned out! The only thing that makes it even sweeter is that Megan loves them even MORE than I do! :)

I haven't had the chance to take pictures of everything yet but wanted to post a sneak peak! If you are a bride and would like this design, we can print the damask print on white, ivory, or colored paper. We can also colorize the damask print itself. The possibilities are endless with this design!
